Kulula was the first low-cost airline of South Africa and was established in 2001. The airline’s name “Kulula” loosely translated means “simple” or “easy” in African Zulu language. In the past, the airline caused a stir time and again with various advertisement campaigns. In 2010, the World Soccer Association FIFA filed a suit against the airline for unfair competition. The association accused Kulula of establishing an unauthorized relationship with the Soccer World Cup 2010. In an ad, the airline had called itself the “Unofficial National Carrier of the “you know what”. In June 2010, Kulula started an advertisement campaign in the national press and offered cheap flights for all customers – except for FIFA president Sepp Blatter – because for him, all flights would be free. The owner of a Boston-Terrier then changed the name of his dog to Sepp Blatter and accepted the offer. On Kulula’s Facebook page, the dog is now introduced as the official mascot. The new promotion now says: “It is official: Sepp Blatter is flying with us”. A partial edition of this exclusive model is now also available via Herpa eXtra online shopping.
