McDonnell Douglas received its first order for an executive jet version of its successful DC-9 from the founder and publisher of Playboy Magazine, Hugh Hefner, in 1967. Equipped with additional fuel tanks for long-distance flights, sofa-style seats for 33 passengers that could be transformed into twelve beds, a private area with separate bed and shower, and last but not least the, with exception of the Playboy trademark, completely black livery made the aircraft to an eye-catcher wherever it appeared.
