Trans Carribbean Douglas DC-8-61

An ad-hoc addition to our collection, and therefore not yet mentioned in our new releases folders: the newly added type DC-8-61 - an extended version, 11.6 meters longer than the previous DC-8. The first Wings model of this type carries the livery of trans Caribbean Airways. Headquartered in New York, the it was one of the most prospering US charter airlines of the 1960s, mostly active in the cargo business. When McDonnell Douglas launched the DC-8 Super 61 in 1966, a plane with seating for up to 250 passengers, it would match exactly with the company's ambitious plans. Registered N8786R and named "Barbara Henry II", the original of our model was launched in December 1967. When the airline was taken over by American Airlines® in 1971, the jet no longer fit into the fleet. It was therefore leased for two years, then sold to the Spanish charter company Spantax in 1973, and together with a sister plane, they were the only two DC-8-61 jets to be operated in Europe over the years to come. This is a limited edition: only 2,500 of the Yesterday Series models have been produced.
