Audi’s path into the luxury class began in 1979 with the launch of the Audi 200, which had been based on the Audi 100. Only in mid-1994 did Audi present an independent luxury class model series with the new A8. After eight years of manufacturing, the ur-A8 (in-house name D2) was replaced by the D3 in November 2002.
