Please note that this article is a limited special edition and that we reserve the right to shorten it. Laker Airways, founded in 1966 by the British Freddie Laker, initially for charter flights, soon made a name for itself as Europe’s first low-cost airline. In 1977, Laker obtained the rights for the transatlantic route from London to New York, which he operated with a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, offering flights for at that time unbelievably cheap 59 pounds sterling (about 360 of today’s euros). For these flights, which were operated under the name Skytrain, Laker ordered five more jets of this type. Five years after the first low-cost flight, Laker Airways had to cease operations in 1982. To mark the 50th anniversary of the DC-10, a limited-edition model of a DC-10 from Laker Airways is now being released in the 1/500 scale.
