Originally founded in 1955 as Deutsche Flugdienst GmbH with the participation of Lufthansa, it changed its name to Condor Flugdienst six years later after the takeover of “Condor Luftreederei” of the food company Dr. Oetker. As a Lufthansa subsidiary, the appearance of Condor remained almost constant for over forty years. After becoming part of the Thomas Cook Group, the new brand "Thomas Cook powered by Condor" was created in 2002. This was followed by further takeovers of shares and repeated variations of the liveries until the British asset manager Attestor took over a majority of shares in 2021.
With this financial investor, Condor is no longer tied to a tour operator for the first time in decades. In order to present itself as an independent company, Condor presented a new livery with vertical stripes in five different colors on April 4, 2022, which is intended to be reminiscent of the typical design of towels, beach chairs and umbrellas.
In December 2022, D-ANRA, sporting green stripes, was delivered as the first of 18 A330-900neos on order. They are expected to replace the Boeing 767-300 fleet on long-haul routes as early as 2024. This latest variant of the A330 outshines the 767 in every respect and is characterized, among other things, by lower fuel consumption and a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions. The extraordinary livery continues to attract attention not only in the discussions, but also on airport aprons.
