When on May 28, 1987, an 18-year old West German landed his Cessna 172 on Red Square in Moscow completely out of the blue, he disgraced the Soviet Union’s almighty military to the core. Mathias Rust was the daredevil’s name. A son of Hamburg, he had rented a school airplane from his association to fly unannounced to Finland, and from there in low-level flight over the Baltic Sea and the closely-guarded border. With this flight, he wanted to “set an example for global peace”. The German Museum of Technology tracked down the meanwhile dismounted and severely weather-beaten Reims-Cessna F-172P with the registration D-ECJB and brought it to Berlin. Since May 29, it has been on display in the German Museum of Technology and is now also released it in the 1/87 scale Herpa Collection.
