The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection operates its own fleet or air tankers, including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. To increase its aerial firefighting capabilities, seven C-130 Hercules are currently being refurbished and reequipped to be able to hold over 4,000 gallons of fire retardant. They will operate alongside several other aircraft from 13 air tanker bases spread out over California and will support the State’s efforts to reach fires in every corner of the state within 20 minutes.
