On June 18, 1960 – 60 years ago – the Council of Ministers of the USSR authorized the development of a new four-engined long-range airliner to replace the propeller-driven TU-114. Three years later, on January 4, 1963 the first prototype took to the skies for its maiden flight. The aircraft was to become the standard long-range aircraft for the Soviet Union, and later for Russia, for decades. Ultimately, the IL-62 was exported into over 30 countries. The currently last operator of the type in passenger service is North Korea’s Air Koryo. It has four aircraft in service, two for scheduled services and two reserved for government use._x000D_Due to the position of its four engines at the rear of the fuselage, the aircraft was prone to tilt onto its tail when empty. To avoid this, Ilyushin installed a retractable support wheel. This special feature has also been added to the die-cast metal model in the 1/200 as an interchangeable part._x000D_
