Following experience with early production versions of the four-engined IL-62 since its introduction into service in 1967, Ilyushin Design Bureau developed a modified version with more powerful, efficient and quieter engines, as well as several structure and avionic improvements. This IL-62M was first presented to the public in 1971 – 50 years ago. CCCP-86673 was the first IL-62M production aircraft and was also the first of this version put on display for the world to see at the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget.
