ATI was founded in 1963 by the then national Alitalia, based in Naples. Its mission was primarily to make domestic Italian air traffic profitable, especially to destinations in southern Italy, by means of a low cost structure. The tight cooperation with Alitalia was also clearly visible by its fleet composition and branding. No less than 38 MD-82s were operated in the 1980s.
