More than 1,200 Antonov AN-12 transports, designated “Cub” by NATO, were produced in various factories throughout the Soviet Union from 1957 to 1973 and served a multitude of roles similar to its U.S. counterpart, the Lockheed C-130. Approximately 250 of the robust Antonovs are still in military and commercial service. For civilian use, Antonov developed the AN-12B without the tail gun in 1963, and later also the AN-12BP variant with further improved electronics and additional fuel tanks. One of the many post-communist freight carriers is the Ukraine Air Alliance (UAA). The airline was founded in Kyiv in 1992 and in its history operated next to all Soviet-built freighter aircraft for commercial charter work, from the small AN-2 to the massive AN-124. Since 2020, the fleet consists of only four AN-12BP, among them UR-CNT. With an attractive outfit in dark blue, the now 55 year old classic continues to reliably haul up to 20 tons of cargo around the globe.
