Founded in 1926 as Western Air Express, the airline became the first prominent victim of the US administration's deregulation policy. In 1987, it could only escape bankruptcy by merging with Delta Air Lines. For many years, it had been a faithful Douglas customer, which is why numerous DC-4s were added to the fleet as of 1946, and remained in service for about ten years.
