On demand of BOAC, Rolls-Royce developed the Conway engine that outperformed the Pratt Whitney engines used on the -300 resulting in a higher take-off weight and range. These advantages were decisive for Brazil’s Varig, which ordered four aircraft with deliveries starting in 1960. The -400 can be recognized by its engines and the antenna on the right wing tip.
