To be able to intercept US espionage aircraft, the MiG-25 was developed in the 1960s, capable of flight three times the speed of sound and at high altitudes. The actual capabilities of the MiG-25 first became known to the west in 1976, when Lt. Viktor Belenko defected to Japan with his MiG-25 during a training flight.
