Up till the political opening at the end of the 1980s, four air wings of the National People’s Army Air Force (in short NVA/LSK) were equipped with the MiG-21MF. One of these units was the Fighter Wing 1 based in Holzdorf, as part of which the aircraft "511" in its brown and green color scheme was then stationed. "511 red" was put into service in November 1973 and scrapped exactly 20 years later in Dresden.
