The “Analytical Task Force”, hence the abbreviation ATF, is a special unit for the detection and combating of biological, chemical, and radiological hazards in Germany, with the focus on chemical analysis. The ATF was established in 2002, and with two exceptions (Berlin state criminal investigation department and the institute of the fire brigade of Saxony-Anhalt), it is affiliated to the professional fire brigades (Hamburg, Mannheim, Dortmund, Cologne, and Munich). The professional fire brigades have a great deal of experience in dealing with such special operations, and are equipped, coordinated, and trained by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance. The Herpa model is based on a special vehicle equipped with measuring and communication technology. Operations can be coordinated from this vehicle.
