The Jagdgeschwader JG-74 was established in 1961and is based in Neuburg a.d. Donau in Bavaria. Following on from the F-86 and F-104, the Phantom became the third airplane type at the squadron as of 1974. The German air force obtained a total of 175 F-4Ks, and they are still in operation due to complications with the successor model, the Typhoon of the Eurofighter-consortium. But now the end is finally in sight. In June, the F-4s official replacement with the Eurofighter will take place at the JG-74. When it finally does go into well-deserved retirement, the Phantom will have been the German air force’s longest-serving jet.
