On December 19, 2014, the first German Airbus A400M "Atlas" landed in Wunstorf, in the North-German state of Lower Saxony. The arrival of the 54+01 marked the beginning of a new era for Air Transport Wing 62. After several program delays, the A400M has become an integral part of the German Air Force and the multinational network. Compared to the Transall C-160, which it has replaced, the "Atlas" can carry a maximum payload of 37 tons over twice the distance – more than 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles). In addition to, for example, one Tiger combat helicopter, three all-terrain vehicles, a Fuchs armored personnel carrier or up to 116 soldiers, the German A400M also fly humanitarian missions. In the course of 2026, the fleet strength of Germany’s sole transport wing in Wunstorf will continue to grow to 53 aircraft. Of the ten nations in Europe and Asia that now operate or have ordered the A400M, the Luftwaffe will then be the world's largest operator of Airbus’ jack of all trades.
