Immediately after ordering four Super Constellation planes in 1955, the newly founded postwar Lufthansa ordered four more planes of this type, of which the first one carried the registration D-AILD. The L-1049 Super Constellation Super Constellations survived their immediate successors called L-1649 Super Star by many years, even though as of 1962, they were only operated on medium-haul routes.
