The Trabi to a tee – or better as it honks and stinks. A scene recalling GDR-times. After opening the gas cock, the driver of the white Trabant 601 which is parked behind the P50, starts the engine and turns the vehicle lights on. Then she briskly merges into the traffic, obstructing the blue Trabi Universal, which of course objects and honks wildly. For crying out loud! The People’s Police have watched everything and approaches with wailing sirens. We don’t know what happened to the driver – the impressively composed scenery leaves the continuation to the observer’s imagination. In this premium Herpa SCENIX showcase, Herpa has impressively eternalized a piece of contemporary history. Herpa SCENIX stands for animation with light and sound, meaning for approx. 30 seconds, a scene of light and sound develops in the showcase, which the viewer can start again and again by slightly pressing the showcase cover. Models and electronics are made in Germany, the electronics are powered by conventional AA batteries which are included. From 1957 on, the Trabant was manufactured by the VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in the former GDR. Initially it was presumed as economical and sturdy, later on however, due to lacking innovations, it proved more and more out-dated. Today, the “Trabi” is considered a classic with many fans in clubs here and abroad. Between 1957 and 1991, a total of 3,051,385 vehicles of the “Trabant” series were produced. On January 1, 2005, approx. 67,000 vehicles were still registered in Germany at the German Kraftfahrtbundesamt (federal motor transport authority). However, in GDR-times, many vehicles were exported to the Czech Republic, Poland and especially to Hungary.
