The “Graf Ignatievo Air Base“ near the second-largest Bulgarian city of Plovdiv is today the only operational base for the country’s fighter planes. The Bulgarian Air Force, one of the oldest in the world, was restructured in 1994, resulting in a third fighter squadron. Besides current generation MiG-29s, older airplanes of the same type are also based here. The original of this model limited to 1,500 items is not among them anymore, being retired in the 90s. It is a modern MiG-21bis with the NATO code “Fishbed-L” and the registration “345”.
