As successor to Aeroflot's Kyiv Directorate, Air Ukraine was established in 1992 as the future national airline of the young Republic of Ukraine which had been founded just one year earlier. The new state took over a fleet of more than 200 aircraft from virtually all types manufactured in the USSR. Flagships were eight four-engined Ilyushin IL-62Ms. They were commonly used on the important long-haul routes to New York and Toronto, where large expatriate communities had already emerged. Later modernization attempts and a merger with Ukraine International Airlines, also founded by the Ukrainian state, failed, whereupon Air Ukraine ceased all operations in 2002.
