Until produced ceased in 1978, over 1000 of the small tri-jets had been produced. The majority of these, at least 500 aircraft, saw service with Aeroflot as commuters in all corners of the vast reaches of the Soviet Union. Even after the USSR was dissolved, several continued to see use by the now Russian Aeroflot until 1995. The sturdy aircraft could be operated far from grass runways and from airports with only minimal infrastructure. The stairs in the rear of the aircraft can as usual be displayed in an open or closed position.
