Since the 1960s through to its shutdown in the year 2011, Aer Union was a major company in aerial firefighting. Next to the training of pilots, it operated a large fleet of decommissioned military aircraft, including Lockheed P-2 Neptunes, P-3 Orions, B-25 Mitchells, Douglas DC-6 and also a number of ex-air force Douglas C-54s. These military variants of the DC-4-family are outfitted with tanks underneath the fuselage that can carry 11,000 liters (2,800 gallons) of water or fire retardant.
