The square VW T3 bus with its typical box shape was launched in May 1979. While T1 and T2 stemmed from the “Beetle” had the new T3 been the first independently developed VW model. Apart from the visually completely modified body shape, it also featured many new technical developments. The motor was still positioned in the rear although that concept had already been considered as outdated on release because it still didn’t feature a non-stop loading space. Next to the classic transporter, VW then also officially launched the term “bus” for high-quality automobile versions for a few years. They featured an entire lining and on the bus type L a standard two-color varnish. In 1981, the product line was complemented by the luxurious “Caravelle”. The Herpa model is a type L with two-color varnish in dark orange / light ivory.
